THE DYNAMITE BLAST
Read Psalm 34:17-19.
Bethanne didn’t feel like going on the class field trip to the rock quarry. She just wanted her lost kitten to come home. And she wanted her daddy to get his job back.
The quarry superintendent met their bus and handed out hard hats. “We’re going to have a dynamite blast today to break up the stone in the quarry,” he said.
A loud horn sounded a warning. A moment later it sounded again. “The horn goes off three times before the blast,” the superintendent explained. “We blow it one time after the blast to let everyone know it’s safe again.” The third horn blared. Then, boom! A loud explosion sounded while the children watched the side of the pit break up and rise into the air. When the “all-clear” horn sounded, the superintendent allowed the children to take a closer look. They also saw the men who had controlled the operation.
As Bethanne told her family about the trip that evening, she picked up a picture of her cat. “It seems like we’ve had a dynamite blast in our house,” she said. “Everything’s fallen apart.”
“Sometimes our world does seem to be blowing to pieces,” Mom agreed. “But those men at the quarry who control the blasts remind me that God is in control of our lives. And just as the stone company profits from their explosions, we can profit from troubles by learning to trust God through tough times.” She smiled. “Bethanne, the quarry’s horn sounds to make sure everyone gets to a safe place. In our case, God is with us throughout every experience we face, so we are always safe.”
