The Broken Thumb

THE BROKEN THUMB

Read 1 Corinthians 12:12-22.

Shelly was the youth group secretary, but she had broken her thumb. “Could you take notes for me this afternoon?” Shelly asked Shawn as the student leaders met one Sunday.

“Sure,” said Shawn.

As ideas were discussed, Doug, their president, offered a suggestion. “How about planning a summer missions trip and giving everyone something to do—you know, get everyone involved?”

“Sounds like a good idea,” said their leader, Mr. Craig. “As a matter of fact, for the next few weeks we’ll be studying the church, which the Bible often refers to as the body of Christ.”

“What about kids who can’t do anything?” asked Shelly. “Let’s face it, there are some kids who don’t seem to have anything to offer.”

“Shelly,” replied Mr. Craig, “how important is your thumb?”

“My thumb?” asked Shelly. “Well, last week I might have said I could live without it. But now that it’s broken, I see how much I really need it. What does that have to do with our missions trip?”

“The Bible says that’s how it is with His body, the church,” explained Mr. Craig. “Each member is important for the total body to function properly.”

“Oh, I see what you mean,” said Shelly. She looked at her thumb. “I guess we can find something for everybody to do,” she said with a grin.
