Priceless Treasure
PRICELESS TREASURE
Read Matthew 6:19-21, 24.
Luis scowled as he raked leaves. “I was gonna collect aluminum cans today to make money for a new skateboard,” he muttered to himself. “Instead, here I am, doing stupid yard work.” It was the first Saturday at their new home, and Mom needed help.
Just then Luis noticed a large hole by a tree. “Look, Mom,” he called. “This would be a good place to hide stuff.”
Mom walked over to look. “Maybe there’s a sack of stolen money inside,” she whispered teasingly. She poked her rake into the hole, and they heard a scraping sound as the rake hit a metal object.
“Something is hidden in there!” cried Luis. Sticking his hand inside the hole, he pulled out a small box. Eagerly, Luis opened the old box and looked inside. Then he let out a disappointed groan. The “treasure” was a handful of stones, a rusty pocketknife, and a mildewed book of children’s poems.
“Somebody must have treasured these things but then forgotten about them,” said Mom. “I hope whoever did it stored treasures in heaven, too! Those are the best treasures, you know, and they can never be ruined or stolen.”
Luis thought about the skateboard he wanted so much. As he looked at the rusty pocketknife, he realized that all material things are bound to wear out or break down. Somehow, a skateboard didn’t seem quite so important anymore.
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Is there something you want very much? Maybe it’s a phone or something one of your friends has. Earthly treasures don’t last, but serving Christ brings treasure you will never lose. It’s more priceless than all the possessions in the world.
TO MEMORIZE:
Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.
