Poisoned Arrows
POISONED ARROWS
Read James 3:8-13.
“I don’t know why Dan had to invite Avi to our Bible club. He’s crazy like his mom,” Alan said. “She’s in a mental institution, y’know.”
“Shame on you, Alan,” said Mrs. Parker. “I’m glad Dan invited Avi. As club sponsor, your father’s goal is to reach unsaved boys.”
The next afternoon after Mr. Parker finished the Bible lesson, the boys went out to play with Alan’s archery set.
The boys had a great time shooting at the target—and missing. “Your turn now, Avi.” Dan handed the bow to him.
When Avi missed, Alan mumbled, “I knew he’d miss. What a dumb shot!”
As Avi walked away, Mr. Parker followed him. “I’m glad you came today, Avi.”
Avi shook his head. “I’m not. These guys don’t want me here.”
Just then four-year-old Kiley ran across the lawn toward her dad. “Mom said the food is—”
“Kiley! Get out of the way!” screamed Alan. But it was too late! An arrow struck Kiley’s forehead!
Later Mr. and Mrs. Parker brought Kiley home from the hospital. “The doctor put six stitches in her forehead,” Mr. Parker told Alan. Then he added, “I only wish Avi’s wounds would heal as easily as Kiley’s.”
“Was Avi hurt?” asked Alan in surprise.
“Yes,” replied Dad. “He was hurt. The Bible says that words can be like poisoned arrows shot out by the tongue, which wound and even kill.”
Alan hung his head. “I’m sorry, Dad. I didn’t realize we were shooting him with words. I’d better call him and apologize.”
