Open Wide
OPEN WIDE
Read Psalm 81:10-16.
Doug was delighted when robins built a nest on a high ledge of the front porch. When the mother bird began sitting on it, he was sure there were eggs in it.
Doug waited eagerly for the eggs to hatch. Then one day he heard peeping sounds and saw the robins bringing worms to the nest. The baby birds had hatched! He was so excited that he called Grandpa to tell him about it.
“I’ll be over to see the little family soon,” Grandpa said.
A few days after the birds had hatched, Doug saw three bald little heads bob up every time a worm was brought to the nest. The babies were getting stronger. Soon he heard louder cheeps, and the little heads shot up with beaks wide open.
When Grandpa came over, Doug showed him the hungry little birds with their wide-open beaks just showing above the nest. “They’ve been getting stronger,” Doug said.
“What do you think would happen if they wouldn’t open those mouths for food?” asked Grandpa.
“Well, I guess they’d never get strong enough to fly,” said Doug.
“Smart boy.” Grandpa smiled. “Now, what do you think happens when Christians don’t open up to take in God’s Word—the spiritual food He gives to make us stronger Christians?”
Doug grinned. “Smart, Grandpa,” he teased, then added, “I’m going to start ‘opening wide’ today by reading my Bible and praying.”
