Once Is Too Often
ONCE IS TOO OFTEN
Read Proverbs 1:20-28.
“Uncle Randy was in a motorcycle accident,” said Mom as she hung up the phone. “He had apparently been taking drugs.” Lisa and Kristen didn’t know what to say. After a moment Mom continued. “You know, the first time Uncle Randy took drugs he said he just wanted to get high once, but he never quit.” Mom turned to leave the room. “I’d like some time alone.”
“Sure, Mom,” the girls answered.
After a few moments Mom heard a crash. She went to investigate and saw pieces of china dolls on the floor. “Girls, you know you’re not to handle those dolls. They’re antique and very fragile.”
“Lisa said it wouldn’t hurt to play with them just once,” murmured Kristen.
Lisa picked up the pieces. “Can’t we fix them?” she asked.
“We’ll try,” said Mom, “but they’ll never be the same. And it won’t change your punishment for disobeying.”
Mom got the glue, and they went to work. “The cracks still show,” observed Lisa.
“They look like scars,” Kristen added.
“I’m doing my best,” Mom answered. “You know, girls, as I try to repair these, I keep thinking of Uncle Randy. His life is full of scars because of drugs. He never finished school, he lost several jobs, and he had this accident.” As she set one doll down to dry, she said to her daughters, “When you look at these dolls, I hope you’ll think about the results of doing wrong—even one time.”
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Have you been tempted to try drugs just once to see what it’s like? Once is too much. Doing drugs for pleasure is wrong in God’s sight. It’s destructive to the body, and taking them once could hurt you for life.
