Not Hungry

NOT HUNGRY

Read Job 23:10-12.

When Brian came home from school, Mom was gone, so he raided the refrigerator and cupboards. When she returned, he was just finishing an after-school snack of potato chips, chocolate milk, ice cream, and cookies.

Mom frowned. “Next time, don’t eat junk food before supper,” she said. As she started dinner, she added, “Mrs. Smith’s grandson, Nicholas, will be going to Sunday school with us this week.”

“I’m tired of Sunday school,” said Brian as he took a comic book and settled down in front of the TV. The next thing he knew, Mom was calling him for dinner. At the table he wrinkled his nose. “I don’t want any.”

“Mrs. Smith sent some cake for dessert,” said Mom.

Brian grinned. “I might eat a little of that.”

“Not until you eat some meat and vegetables,” Dad said.

“But I’m not hungry,” protested Brian.

“Because you filled up on junk food,” Mom reminded him. As she passed the casserole to him, she added, “And that’s exactly why you’re not enjoying Sunday school.”

Brian snorted. “I don’t enjoy church because I eat potato chips? Aw, Mom!”

“You know what your mother means,” said Dad. “Unless we keep after you, you feed your mind junk food—TV shows, comic books, and video games.”

Mom passed Brian the vegetables. “If you aren’t careful, you’re going to be sick—spiritually and physically,” she added.

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Are you filling your mind with junk food rather than wholesome spiritual food? Make up your mind to change your mental eating habits before you become spiritually sick. Read God’s Word. Listen carefully to your Sunday school teacher and your pastor. Spend time with other Christians.

TO MEMORIZE:

I have not departed from his commands, but have treasured his words more than daily food.
