Loose Lips
LOOSE LIPS
Read Psalm 119:12-16.
Stephanie and her brother were having fun looking through old trunks in Grandpa and Grandma’s attic. “Aren’t these clothes funny?”
“Yeah,” agreed Caleb as he tried on one of Grandpa’s old hats. “Hey, look at this trunk! It’s full of army stuff.”
Stephanie came over to look. “I wonder what this means?” She held up a poster with the words “Loose Lips Sink Ships.” It had a picture of a sinking ship above the words.
“Let’s go ask Grandpa,” suggested Caleb.
They climbed down the narrow stairs, clutching the old poster. When they asked Grandpa about it, his face grew serious. “These signs were posted in areas where military secrets were discussed. ‘Loose lips’ are lips that talk a lot, so the signs were a reminder that talking about such things could bring disaster. If someone carelessly gave out our plans to enemy spies, it might mean death to hundreds of our sailors or soldiers.”
“Wow!” exclaimed Caleb. “Hundreds of lives depended on whether or not you happened to say a few words to the wrong person!”
Grandpa gazed at the old poster. “You know, ‘loose lips’ aren’t always bad,” he said. “In fact, sometimes we need to loosen up our lips in order to save lives.”
“What do you mean by that?” asked Stephanie in surprise.
“God has given us the gospel, a very special message about His Son,” explained Grandpa. “But He doesn’t want us to keep it. He expects us to share it so that many lives can be saved.”
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Are you tight lipped when it comes to telling others about Jesus? Do you think it’s enough that your lifestyle pleases the Lord—that you’re honest, kind, helpful, cheerful? That’s good, but God also wants to use your lips to spread His message. Don’t be afraid to talk about Him.
