In Remembrance
IN REMEMBRANCE
Read 1 Corinthians 11:23-28.
Caleb and Camille tucked pansies and geraniums into the soil. They were helping Dad decorate their grandparents’ graves. “Look at all the flags waving in the breeze,” said Caleb as he glanced around the cemetery.
Camille looked up from her work. “Daddy, how come only some graves have flags flying beside them?” she asked.
“Those flags honor the soldiers who gave their lives to protect our country’s freedom,” Dad explained.
“They paid a big price to keep us free, didn’t they?” Caleb asked thoughtfully.
“Yes, they did,” agreed Dad. He gathered the tools they had been using. “But someone else paid a greater price for our freedom than the soldiers did,” he observed as they started toward the car.
Caleb and Camille looked puzzled. “Who?”
“Jesus. He died on the cross to free us from the penalty of sin,” answered Dad. “He arose from the dead and is alive in heaven now, so there’s no need to decorate a grave for Him. But there is a way we can remember His sacrifice.”
“How?” Caleb asked.
“By participating in the Communion service at church,” Dad explained. “When believers take Communion, they remember Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. They are also looking forward to Christ’s return. The Communion service and all that it means should fill our hearts with thanksgiving.”
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Before you celebrate the Lord’s Supper in church, make sure you are a Christian. Then examine your heart by asking yourself these questions: Am I obeying the Lord in my life? Have I confessed all known sin? If you have done anything that would hurt your fellowship with the Lord, confess it to Him before you take Communion. Then participate with a joyful and grateful heart.
TO MEMORIZE:
Every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again.
