GRANDMA’S ATTIC (PART 2)

Read Psalm 1:1-3.

As Jill and her aunt cleaned Grandma’s attic, Aunt Sarah found a box of high school souvenirs. She went through them, telling Jill about each one. Aunt Sarah held up a long piece of yarn. “This is the yarn I wrapped around Tom’s ring so I could wear it. We went steady for a month! I haven’t thought of him in years.”

“Don’t you forget anything, Aunt Sarah? Everything you see reminds you of something! Your head must be stuffed fuller than this attic.”

“Well, I’ve heard that people never really forget anything,” said Aunt Sarah. “It’s in the brain, but it may take something like a souvenir to bring it into the part of our mind where we can recall it.” She stretched and said, “I’m getting tired and thirsty. Let’s take a break.”

They went to the kitchen and found some lemonade. As they sipped it, Aunt Sarah asked, “Jill, what do you have in your attic?” Jill started thinking about the attic at her home, but Aunt Sarah leaned forward and tapped her on the head. “What I mean is, what do you have stored away up here?” she said. “Are there plenty of Bible verses in your ‘storage area’?”

“I try to learn as much as I can,” Jill said.

“Once memories are in place, things we see or hear can bring them back,” said Aunt Sarah. “It’s the same with Scripture. When you’ve memorized God’s Word, He can use people and events to bring it to mind as you need it. That’s one way the Holy Spirit helps you each day.”

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Have you ever seen or heard something that reminded you of a verse you knew? By memorizing God’s Word and associating it with everyday things, you make it part of your life. As you become older, it will come back to you when you need it.
