FIRST IN EVERYTHING
Read Colossians 1:16-19.
Keyshawn was upset! He had been waiting all week to watch his favorite TV show. Last time it had ended at a very exciting place with the words “To be continued.” But now the words “Special Bulletin” had come on the screen. An announcer said, “All regular programming is preempted tonight by a message from our president on the economy.”
Keyshawn whined. “I don’t want to hear the president. I don’t even know what economy is.”
“I’m sorry,” said Mom, “but the networks think this speech is important. Now let me listen.” Keyshawn was quiet, but he wasn’t happy.
At Sunday school Mr. Wilson had the kids read Colossians 1:16-19. When they got to verse 18, Chase asked Mr. Wilson what it means that Christ “is first in everything.” As he often did, Mr. Wilson asked if anyone could help with the meaning of those words.
Keyshawn raised his hand. “On TV this week they put the president on in place of my favorite show. Mom said it was because what he had to say was important. Does being ‘first in everything’ mean Jesus is more important than anyone else?”
“That’s right, Keyshawn,” said Mr. Wilson. “This verse means that Christ should have first place over everything else in our lives. He is even more important than the president!” Then Mr. Wilson said, “Let’s tell God we want Him to have first place in our lives, shall we?”
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Does Christ have first place in your life, or is He crowded out by other things like hobbies, sports, TV, or friends? Let Him be more important to you than anything or anyone else. You shouldn’t let anything keep you from making Jesus number one in your life!
TO MEMORIZE:
Christ is also the head of the church, which is his body. He is the beginning, supreme over all who rise from the dead. So he is first in everything.
