Attractive Bait
ATTRACTIVE BAIT
Read 1 Peter 5:8-11.
“Dad, my fishing line is pulling!” shouted Ron.
Dad laughed. “That’s because there’s a fish on the end. Start reeling it in.”
Soon the little sunfish was lying on the sand, but it was too small to keep. Reluctantly Ron put it back into the water. It flipped its tail, and in a moment it had disappeared.
“Whoa!” said Dad as Ron tossed his line back into the lake. “Aren’t you forgetting something?” Ron looked at him, puzzled. “The bait,” Dad explained.
Ron laughed. “Oh yeah,” he said, pulling his line back in. “I guess no fish would be dumb enough to bite on the bare hook, would it? I’ll disguise it and make it look good with this juicy worm. The fish won’t know there’s any danger, so it’ll open its mouth and swallow the hook. Then I’ll have it!”
“That reminds me of the way Satan works,” Dad mused.
Ron was curious. “What do you mean, Dad?”
“Satan tries to make sin look attractive,” explained Dad. “Sometimes we’re uneasy about something, or maybe we’ve been warned that it’s wrong. Yet it looks good or our friends are doing it, and we’re tempted to try it. Satan is a master at disguising sin and making bad things look good. So when you’re tempted by a questionable activity, remember the fish. It wouldn’t have gotten caught if it had stayed away from the hook.”
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Does Satan catch your attention with a good movie so that you become careless about what you watch? Does he make playing video games so much fun that you do it even though you know you’re spending too much time and money? What other methods does he use? Be careful.
TO MEMORIZE:
Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.
