Ask What You Can Do
ASK WHAT YOU CAN DO
Read 1 Chronicles 16:23-29.
Carla was tired of her church. She told her mother, “I don’t get anything out of the worship services. The music seems so dull, and I can’t follow Pastor Reese’s sermons. I wish I didn’t always have to go!” Mom told Carla she would pray with her about it.
At school that week Carla was assigned to prepare an oral report on John F. Kennedy. She found some interesting facts about him. He was the youngest man ever elected president, and he was shot and killed while still in office.
When Carla finished her report, she asked her mom to listen as she practiced it. She ended with a quote from President Kennedy’s inaugural address. “He is very famous for this line: ‘Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.’”
Mom remained silent.
“Well, what do you think?” Carla asked.
“Oh, I’m sorry,” said Mom. “It’s good, dear, but that last line started me thinking. Remember what you told me about not being able to get anything out of the church services? Maybe we could apply President Kennedy’s quote here. Ask not what your church can do for you; ask what you can do for your church.”
“Hmmm, maybe so!” Carla responded. She thought a lot about it that week, and she decided to try it.
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Do you just sit around expecting to receive blessings at church, or do you try to be a blessing to others? In church, as in other areas, you generally get out of it as much as you put into it. True worship involves giving glory to God, giving offerings to God, and giving ourselves to God.
TO MEMORIZE:
Give to the LORD the glory he deserves! Bring your offering and come into his presence. Worship the LORD in all his holy splendor.
