An Important Day
AN IMPORTANT DAY
Read Matthew 2:1-3, 7-11.
Christopher woke with excitement. “It’s an important day, Mom,” he announced as he came into the kitchen.
Mom looked up from pouring juice. “It is?” she asked. “Why is that?”
“Oh, Mom, you know!” Christopher said. “It’s Christmas Eve!” The Benson family followed the Swedish tradition of opening their gifts to each other on Christmas Eve.
Throughout the day Christopher made many trips to the Christmas tree to look at the presents. Finally, when the evening meal was over, the family gathered to open the presents. Christopher was happy to get a movie, a sweater, a book, candy, and what he wanted most of all—a baseball mitt! Already he was dreaming of summer and . . .
But Dad was talking. “Let’s read about the gifts the wise men brought to Jesus,” Dad said. After reading the story he added, “We’ve given each other gifts to show our love, and we have a gift for Jesus, too.” He picked up a box. “As you know, this box contains our Christmas offering money. Now I’d like you to think about giving Jesus what He wants most—yourself.”
Christopher knew he had never given himself to Jesus. A few minutes after he had gone to bed, he jumped up and ran back to the family room. “I want to give myself to Jesus,” he told his parents.
After he prayed he said, “Today is the day I asked Jesus to save me from my sins. That’s even more important than opening all the presents!”
