A Slow Start
A SLOW START
Read Psalm 119:89-96.
For weeks Alyce had promised to take daily walks with her grandfather. Finally she began doing it and really enjoyed the walks. “I should have begun doing this a long time ago,” she said as they walked together one day. “It was hard getting started, but now I see what I’ve been missing!”
“I know what you mean,” answered her grandfather. “That’s just the way I used to be about reading my Bible.”
Alyce stopped. “You’ve read your Bible every day as long as you’ve lived with us!”
“That’s true.” Grandfather smiled. “But I had a hard time getting myself to do it every day even though I’ve always believed I should read it. One day someone said that if I’d just get started, it would soon become as natural as breathing.”
Alyce knew what her grandfather was trying to tell her. She planned to read her Bible and had even started once, but soon she forgot all about it. She told her grandfather about that.
“Did you try to see how many chapters you could read at one time?” he asked. “Or did you read a few verses at a time to see what you could get out of it?” Alyce admitted that she had tried to keep up with her brother.
“A slow start is best,” Grandfather suggested. “It’s like walking. You don’t walk three miles the first day. You start slowly, do it regularly, and add the miles gradually.”
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Have you found it hard to spend time each day reading the Bible? When you read, do you simply try to get through as fast as you can? God’s Word should be read slowly and carefully so it can help you learn how to live as a Christian. Make God’s Word a natural part of your life.
