A Dark Place
A DARK PLACE
Read John 12:34-36, 46.
As Cammie listened to the cheerful voices singing choruses at Bible club, she wished she could stay at Mrs. Steiner’s house forever. She was glad she had come and heard about Jesus and that she had trusted him as her Savior.
Cammie lingered to help Mrs. Steiner straighten the family room. “Thank you, Cammie,” said Mrs. Steiner. “Now, how about a dish of peaches before you go? Would you like to call your parents and make sure it’s all right?”
“It’ll be okay,” Cammie answered. “Mom works late, and Dad will be passed out—I mean, sleeping on the couch.”
“Well then, please get a jar of my home-canned peaches from the fruit cellar,” Mrs. Steiner said. “I’ll get out the dishes and milk.” Cammie was limping when she returned from the basement.
“The light didn’t go on,” Cammie explained, “so I couldn’t see very well. I ran into a ladder, but I’m fine.”
“Oh dear, the bulb must have burned out,” Mrs. Steiner said. “I’m sorry. A light is needed in a dark place like the fruit cellar.” She opened the jar and dished up the golden fruit. “How are things going at home?”
Cammie sighed and told how her mom worked late hours and her dad was an alcoholic.
“It must be hard for you, Cammie,” sympathized Mrs. Steiner, “but Jesus needs you there in your home. Just like the fruit cellar really needed a light, you can be a light in your home to help your parents see the love of Christ.”
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Are you the only Christian in your home or in your classroom? It’s difficult to stand alone. But it’s in the dark that a light is needed the most.
TO MEMORIZE:
Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people.
Philippians 2:15
BE GOD’S LIGHT.
