A Comforter
A COMFORTER
Read 2 Corinthians 1:3-5, 7.
Jenna and Jill. People who didn’t know them thought they were twins. The two girls seemed inseparable. But one day that all changed.
“Jill, aren’t you going to stay for pep assembly?” Jenna asked.
“No, I don’t feel well,” Jill said. “I called my mom to come and get me.”
“See you tomorrow then,” said Jenna.
But Jill didn’t come to school the next day. Jenna stopped to see her at home, but she was resting. Jill did come back to school the next week, but she seemed very tired. And before long, she was in the hospital.
Jenna went there and brought their favorite flower, a pink rose. She could tell Jill liked the rose even though she didn’t say much. She was hooked to several tubes, and nurses kept checking her.
The longer Jill stayed in the hospital, the less Jenna visited her.
“Jenna, who’s your best friend?” asked Mom one day.
Jenna looked puzzled. “Jill, of course!”
“I thought best friends liked to be together,” her mother answered. “You haven’t seen Jill in days.”
Jenna burst into tears. “Mom, I can’t go there. Jill can barely talk. And she looks so different. What can I say?”
“You don’t need to say anything,” answered Mom. “Just be there. Or take your Bible along and read to her. Jill really needs a friend now. Her mom told me that she thinks you no longer care about her.”
“But I do, Mom!” exclaimed Jenna. “I care so much it hurts!”
“Then go be with her,” encouraged Jenna’s mother. “Show her you still care.”
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Do you know someone who is ill? Be a comforter. Visit if possible. Read a few comforting Bible verses. Send a card, a note, flowers, or a favorite item.
