Who He Is

Psalm 66:1-7

For the choir director: A psalm. A song.

1Shout joyful praises to God, all the earth!

2Sing about the glory of his name!

Tell the world how glorious he is.

3Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!

Your enemies cringe before your mighty power.

4Everything on earth will worship you;

they will sing your praises,

shouting your name in glorious songs.”

5Come and see what our God has done,

what awesome miracles he does for his people!

6He made a dry path through the Red Sea,

and his people went across on foot.

Come, let us rejoice in who he is.

7For by his great power he rules forever.

He watches every movement of the nations;

let no rebel rise in defiance.

My parents bought me a new bike last week,” said ten-year-old Brittany. “It’s really cool. And last month they got me three new outfits for school. And next month they’re going to get me my own computer.”

“Wow,” says Kristi, “you must really love your parents for all that.”

“Yeah, I guess,” Brittany answers. “What have you gotten from your parents?”

Kristi had to think a moment. “Well, they don’t have much money, but . . . well, my dad, he’s so funny. Every night at the dinner table he tells a joke. Sometimes they’re pretty dumb, but even then he’s funny about it. And every night before I go to bed, my mom gives me a big hug.”

“Wow,” says Brittany. “I wish I had your parents.”

It’s good to thank God for the many things he gives us, but sometimes he just wants us to “rejoice in who he is” (verse 6).

Jesus, our only joy be Thou,

As Thou our prize wilt be;

Jesus, be Thou our glory now,

And through eternity.

“Come and see,” invites the psalmist (verse 5). Look for similar invitations in John 1:35-39, 45-46. Seeing is the first step toward believing. As for God watching everyone (verse 7), see Proverbs 15:3; Exodus 14:24; and Job 31:4.
