The Power Behind The Sea

The Power Behind The Sea

Psalm 93

1The LORD is king! He is robed in majesty.

Indeed, the LORD is robed in majesty and armed with strength.

The world is firmly established;

it cannot be shaken.

2Your throne, O LORD, has been established from time immemorial.

You yourself are from the everlasting past.

3The mighty oceans have roared, O LORD.

The mighty oceans roar like thunder;

the mighty oceans roar as they pound the shore.

4But mightier than the violent raging of the seas,

mightier than the breakers on the shore—

the LORD above is mightier than these!

5Your royal decrees cannot be changed.

The nature of your reign, O LORD, is holiness forever.

From ancient days people have been awestruck by the power of the ocean. Wave after wave pounds onto the shore and pulls itself back. On rocky coastlines waves hit with power, sending spray and sound all around. Out at sea rough water can toss a huge boat. A hurricane can turn waves into weapons.

But there is one mightier than the ocean.

Many people love to sit by the sea and meditate. The pounding waves resonate deep within the human soul. But Christians know the one who made those waves. We have a relationship with the one who first strung the H2 with the O. We are sustained by one more powerful than the strongest undertow.

We don’t honor the ocean; we exalt the Creator of the ocean. We don’t just meditate on the gentle drumbeat of the waves on shore; we commune with the heart of the drummer. We worship the Lord, the eternal King, who is our Lord and closest friend.

God moves in a mysterious way

His wonders to perform;

He plants his footsteps in the sea,

And rides upon the storm.

WILLIAM COWPER

In medieval times it was thought that the earth remained in a fixed position while the sun and other heavenly bodies circled it. This belief was based in part on Psalm 93:1: “The world is firmly established.”

“From eternity, before the formation of the world, God always remained the same in himself, not needing creation or any creature, thereby to obtain any new perfection.”
