Seekers

Psalm 105:1-8

1Give thanks to the LORD and proclaim his greatness.

Let the whole world know what he has done.

2Sing to him; yes, sing his praises.

Tell everyone about his miracles.

3Exult in his holy name;

O worshipers of the LORD, rejoice!

4Search for the LORD and for his strength,

and keep on searching.

5Think of the wonderful works he has done,

the miracles and the judgments he handed down,

6O children of Abraham, God’s servant,

O descendants of Jacob, God’s chosen one.

7He is the LORD our God.

His rule is seen throughout the land.

8He always stands by his covenant—

the commitment he made to a thousand generations.

The end of the twentieth century may go down in church history as the era of the “seeker church.” Many congregations today seek out the seeker, making their services more attractive to those who may not already be believers. The trend has spawned more entertaining worship services (for good or ill) and friendlier church lobbies.

Many Christians debate whether this is a good thing. We won’t solve the issue in these few paragraphs. But this emphasis on seekers does make us reflect on our own spiritual walk. Are we seeking God as we should?

Just because we make a commitment to follow Christ does not mean that our spiritual journey is complete. Many Christians seem to shut down somewhere along the way. Soon after they “get their tickets punched” for the pearly gates, they grab an upper berth and go to sleep. But Christians should be seeking to know God better. Paul prayed for believers to “keep on growing in your knowledge and understanding” (Philippians 1:9) and desired that Christ would “be more and more at home in your hearts” (Ephesians 3:17).

Psalm 105 begins with an awesome worship service—thanking, proclaiming, praising, exulting—and searching. “Search for the Lord,” it advises us, “and keep on searching.” May we all strive to know more and more of this God who seeks a growing relationship with us.

Spread, O spread, thou mighty word

Spread the Kingdom of the Lord,

Wheresoe’er His breath has given

Life to beings meant for heaven.
