Not A Clue

Psalm 92:1-8

A psalm to be sung on the LORD’s Day. A song.

1It is good to give thanks to the LORD,

to sing praises to the Most High.

2It is good to proclaim your unfailing love in the morning,

your faithfulness in the evening,

3accompanied by the harp and lute

and the harmony of the lyre.

4You thrill me, LORD, with all you have done for me!

I sing for joy because of what you have done.

5O LORD, what great miracles you do!

And how deep are your thoughts.

6Only an ignorant person would not know this!

Only a fool would not understand it.

7Although the wicked flourish like weeds,

and evildoers blossom with success,

there is only eternal destruction ahead of them.

8But you are exalted in the heavens.

You, O LORD, continue forever.

Have you ever been explaining something to a friend when you suddenly realized that your friend didn’t have a clue about what you were saying? You may have explained your thought very well, but your friend just didn’t “get it.”

This type of response doesn’t necessarily imply that a person is dumb. In fact, people are often brilliant in certain fields but completely lost in others. Part of their lack of understanding may be because they lack a basic familiarity with the subject. If people lack any framework for understanding, all new information they receive will seem completely foreign to them. The words just go in one ear and out the other without hitting much in between.

In Psalm 92:6 the psalmist chides the ignorant person who doesn’t know about the Lord’s great miracles. God is busy doing thrilling things all around us, but these people don’t “get it.” The key to seeing these works of God involves an attitude shift that opens a person up to what’s really happening. One way to make this attitude shift is by following the instructions of the first part of this psalm. It is good to give thanks and sing praises. A thankful heart is thrilled with what the Lord does. This thankfulness creates a gridwork on which we can place more and more knowledge of the great miracles of God. Let’s cultivate that spirit of thankfulness today and every day. And let’s open our eyes to the thrills of a life with God.

O Jesus my Savior, with Thee I am blest,
