From God Alone

Psalm 62:1-7

For Jeduthun, the choir director: A psalm of David.

1I wait quietly before God,

for my salvation comes from him.

2He alone is my rock and my salvation,

my fortress where I will never be shaken.

3So many enemies against one man—

all of them trying to kill me.

To them I’m just a broken-down wall

or a tottering fence.

4They plan to topple me from my high position.

They delight in telling lies about me.

They are friendly to my face,

but they curse me in their hearts.

5I wait quietly before God,

for my hope is in him.

6He alone is my rock and my salvation,

my fortress where I will not be shaken.

7My salvation and my honor come from God alone.

He is my refuge, a rock where no enemy can reach me.

Psalm 62 credits David as its writer and Jeduthun as its director. Jeduthun has his name attached to two other psalms, and apparently he was one of the leading musicians in David’s court. He had six sons who followed in his profession (1 Chronicles 25:3).

Now imagine you’re one of Jeduthun’s sons, and you’re conducting the Temple singers for the first time. Maybe you’ve even been given this psalm to direct. How nervous would you be with your father looking on and the whole crowd waiting to hear your choir? Would you be worrying about other trainees vying for your position, perhaps even your own brothers? Would they be sniping at you, picking apart every mistake?

Certainly David felt this way as he advanced to the throne, but you may feel the same way in whatever you do. Are there people trying to topple you? Do they flatter you to your face and then rip your back to shreds? How can you handle that? “Wait quietly before God.” He is your refuge, and you should look to him for your salvation and honor (verse 7).

Little flock, to joy then yield thee!

Jacob’s God will ever shield thee;

Rest secure with this Defender,

At His will all foes surrender.
