What’s in Your Purse? - Whose Picture Can We Take Out?
DRAINERS. We’ve all got them—you know, people who can suck the oxygen out of the room, people who invade your physical and mental space with their ongoing issues, people whom you know you’ve been commanded by God to love—but it’s really, really hard.
And it’s not always a nosy neighbor or the relationally challenged woman sitting in the next cube. Sometimes it’s a close friend or family member. I know because my family has “issues.”
Sometimes such people create conflict because they enjoy drama. I’m sure you know the type—someone who seems to get a “high” when there is dissension among friends or family members. I’m the opposite. Discord burdens me.
Friends or family members who generate drama can drain your energy and make your purse so heavy that you can’t drag your fanny out of the house. Codependency is a big word with big meaning that can extend from enabling someone with a drug habit to enabling someone to gossip. Want to get that heavy purse off your shoulder? Then put up the hand.
If someone is pushing your buttons, it’s not that person’s fault . . . it’s your fault for not setting your own boundaries. It’s your fault for not shutting down the negativity.
Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins. (1 Peter 4:8)
You can’t remove some people’s picture out of your purse—especially when they’re family—but you sure can choose to pull their issues out of there! You can also take out the concealer—you’ll have far fewer circles under your eyes from fretting all night!
