What’s in Your Purse? - How Many Lists Do You Have in There? (Part Trois)
AS LONG AS I’m on a roll and ragging on the kids’ schedule, let’s discuss weekends. I have listened to women tell me what’s on their schedule for their days off, and I swear—I get exhausted before they tell me what they’re doing on Saturday evening!
Families, and husbands and wives in particular, don’t have enough downtime these days. And they certainly have no downtime together. From demanding careers, to the aforementioned kid stuff, to packed social calendars, there seems to be no time just to be still. Do you even remember how to just sit and talk with your husband over a leisurely dinner? What about taking a Saturday morning to sit outside and read the paper together? Does that sound like pure fantasy?
Steve and I sometimes overcommit our weekends, and when we do I don’t feel refreshed on Monday. However, I found if we reserve one night (Friday or Saturday) and one day (Saturday or Sunday) for “quiet time,” we’re totally renewed by Sunday evening. Some women I’ve talked to feel guilty about this. Girlfriends, give yourself a pass! You don’t have to be productive 100 percent of every minute of every day.
But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41-42)
On the contrary, if you can learn to afford yourself this “luxury,” your productivity will soar over the next seventy-two hours.
Girlfriend, that knot in your right shoulder may be there because your purse is too heavy with excess burdens and commitments. What can you choose to eliminate? Uncommon joy is waiting.
