Spread Too Thin - The Disappearing Act (Part Trois)

THE ASSESSMENT STAGE was only part one of renewing my heart. And, for me, it was actually the hardest part of cocooning. After resting, reading, and assessing, I was ready to get on with my cocooning process—dreaming. Big honkin’ Barbie-pink dreams. Like we had as little girls. You know the one . . . where we come bouncing to the door, our long beautiful blonde hair falling perfectly to the small of our back as our gorgeous hunk of a boyfriend sporting a cardigan and perfect white teeth sweeps us off our feet to drive us in his racy Corvette to our future home—the two-story pink dream house. Yeah. That one.

What was your last dream? To graduate from college? To get married? To have children? To buy a home? Yeah. I thought so. You’re rusty too. I think women get so busy with the nits and nats of life that we fail to be still and allow God to fill our minds with possibilities. That’s why I think the part of cocooning God must really love comes when you’re finally quiet enough to hear him. You see, when you pray for his guidance and wisdom, you find that most of those “harebrained” ideas you came up with are actually his.

For example, I opened a marketing consulting firm in 1994, and from day one, it was an instant success. Where did I get such a brilliant idea? Sitting in church, asking God to guide me to find a way to balance my professional career and talents with the needs of my family.

Another dream I had while cocooning was of having a close relationship with my adult children and a family unit that continued to thrive after they left home. God showed me how to do it.

And this book—another dream God laid on my heart while I was cocooning several years ago. I thought it pretty strange, not being a writer or having anything to say, that I would dream of having a book published. But here it is. A dream come true.

Trust in the LORD and do good. Then you will live safely in the land and prosper. Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you your heart’s desires. (Psalm 37:3-4)

So, when was the last time you dreamed big honkin’ Barbie-pink dreams? It might be time to be still and listen and allow the Lord to fertilize your imagination.
