Getting a Do-Over - I Would Look for God (Part Cinq)

MARCIE’S FAMILY were not churchgoing people. Having traveled across the pond when Marcie was a baby, they were members of the Church of England. Marcie had a “book-knowledge” understanding of Christ, but she didn’t have that close encounter many of us have been blessed with. She just hadn’t been exposed to very many views on theology.

I have made my rounds with the churches—I have worshiped as a Baptist, a Methodist, an evangelical, and a Presbyterian. (If you don’t belong to one of these affiliations, don’t feel left out—it just means I haven’t gotten to yours yet.) And here’s why I have made a number of moves: I really struggle with one-size-fits-all organized religion. I’m not convinced that any one of them has it all figured out.

I realized that my own spiritual maturation was being thwarted because I was getting hung up trying to sort through all the theology, politics, and views. Once I understood that my problem wasn’t my spiritual journey but the round holes I was trying to fit my square peg into, I finally began to grow. But this was scary.

To look beyond the faith or doctrine we were raised with as a means to grow in our personal walk seems counterintuitive. But for me, the questioning, prayer, and revelation have made me a stronger believer.

Marcie said that she now realizes that happiness, peace, wisdom, and thankfulness don’t come from experience or age but rather from finding truth. And that truth brings her uncommon joy.

And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. (John 8:32)
