Due to Circumstances beyond Our Control - Uncertainty

I THINK WOMEN, in general, have a bigger issue with uncertainty than they do with either fear or doubt. So often I hear, “I just want to know what’s going to happen; I want to know what to expect.” We want a crystal ball, and we want our mates to have one, too, but that’s impossible when there are circumstances beyond our control. And this is why we worry.

I think, as women, we most often worry that we will not have what we need in the future: Love. Friendships. Family. Financial security. Health.

Do you find this as interesting as I do? We worry about what we might not have in some distant future when we’ve never really gone without. I know there are exceptions—and trust me, I’ve been in some tight financial situations in my life. I know what it feels like to have to seriously scrimp on groceries in order to take the kids to the doctor. But I still had what I needed each day.

So I ask you: Have you ever gone hungry? Have you ever had no clothes to wear? Have you ever lacked a place to sleep? Have you ever gone a day without someone who cared for you? Me neither. God has always provided. Then why do we fret about the uncertainty of tomorrow? It is robbing us of our ability to live intentionally today.

That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? (Matthew 6:25-26)

I’m with you, girlfriend. I think I’ll try to give up worrying about my future because there is one thing I can be certain about—today I am alive and well.
