I Sing The Mighty Power Of God

I Sing the Mighty Power of God

I sing the mighty pow’r of God,

That made the mountains rise;

That spread the flowing seas abroad,

And built the lofty skies.

I sing the wisdom that ordained

The sun to rule the day;

The moon shines full at His command,

And all the stars obey.

I sing the goodness of the Lord,

That filled the earth with food;

He formed the creatures with His Word,

And then pronounced them good.

Lord, how Thy wonders are displayed,

Where e’re I turn my eye:

If I survey the ground I tread,

Or gaze upon the sky!

There’s not a plant or flow’r below,

But makes Thy glories known:

And clouds arise, and tempests blow,

By order from Thy throne;

While all that borrows life from Thee

Is ever in Thy care.

And ev’rywhere that man can be,

Thou, God, art present there.

ISAAC WATTS (1674–1748)

ISAAC WATTS never married, yet he loved children. In his own childhood, he was precocious. He learned Latin when he was four, Greek when he was eight or nine, French when he was eleven, and Hebrew when he was thirteen. As an adult, he not only wrote books on theology, but on psychology, logic, and astronomy as well. He also wrote a book of children’s songs, which included this hymn, even though it was considered a hymn for adults. His Divine and Moral Songs for Children was the first hymnal written for children and remained popular for more than a hundred years.

The first lesson that a child should learn is a lesson that adults should never forget: The great God who created this vast universe loves us and keeps us in His care. “I Sing the Mighty Power of God” teaches that lesson.

* * *

For the Lord is a great God, a great King above all gods. He holds in his hands the depths of the earth and the mightiest mountains. The sea belongs to him, for he made it. His hands formed the dry land, too.
