Day By Day And With Each Passing Moment
Day by Day and with Each Passing Moment
Day by day and with each passing moment,
Strength I find to meet my trials here;
Trusting in my Father’s wise bestowment,
I’ve no cause for worry or for fear.
He whose heart is kind beyond all measure
Gives unto each day what He deems best—
Lovingly, its part of pain and pleasure,
Mingling toil with peace and rest.
Ev’ry day the Lord Himself is near me
With a special mercy for each hour;
All my cares He fain would bear, and cheer me,
He whose name is Counsellor and Pow’r.
The protection of His child and treasure
Is a charge that on Himself He laid;
“As thy days, thy strength shall be in measure,”
This the pledge to me He made.
Help me then in ev’ry tribulation
So to trust Thy promises, O Lord,
That I lose not faith’s sweet consolation
Offered me within Thy holy Word.
Help me, Lord, when toil and trouble meeting,
E’er to take, as from a father’s hand,
One by one, the days, the moments fleeting,
Till I reach the promised land.
Translated by Andrew L. Skoog (1856–1934)
GOD IS ALWAYS WITH US, even during our most painful experiences. Carolina Sandell Berg understood this truth personally. She was never strong as a child, so she spent much time in her father’s study and grew especially close to him. When she was twenty-six, she accompanied her father, who was a parish pastor in Fröderyd, Sweden, on a voyage to Göteborg. As they stood on deck, the boat lurched and spilled Pastor Sandell overboard. The crew was unable to save him, and he drowned as his daughter looked on.
Berg was already well known for hymns she had published as a young girl, but this tragedy inspired many more. At the loss of her earthly father, she drew even closer to her heavenly Father. She discovered that even during the times of greatest loss, God’s comforting presence was near.
We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed.
2 Corinthians 4:8-9
