Channels Only
How I praise Thee, precious Savior,
That Thy love laid hold of me;
Thou hast saved and cleansed and filled me
That I might Thy channel be.
Channels only, blessed Master,
But with all Thy wondrous pow’r
Flowing thro’ us, Thou canst use us
Ev’ry day and ev’ry hour.
Emptied that Thou shouldest fill me,
A clean vessel in Thy hand;
With no pow’r but as Thou givest
Graciously with each command.
Witnessing Thy pow’r to save me,
Setting free from self and sin;
Thou who boughtest to possess me,
In Thy fullness, Lord, come in.
Jesus, fill now with Thy Spirit
Hearts that full surrender know;
That the streams of living water
From our inner man may flow.
THE ORIGINAL MEANING of channel was a waterway, like the English Channel. It’s related to the word canal. It gained a figurative meaning as any route of communication or authority: In armies and businesses, it’s important to “go through the right channels” to get something done. Now it also refers to electronic frequencies that TV stations use to get their signals to your set.
So how are we to be “channels”? We are conduits for the living water of Christ. The Spirit flows within us and through us to others. Note that the channel is not the source of the water it carries. We do not create goodness or power; we merely receive it and channel it forward. Let the gospel flow freely through you in all you say and do.
In a wealthy home some utensils are made of gold and silver, and some are made of wood and clay. The expensive utensils are used for special occasions, and the cheap ones are for everyday use. If you keep yourself pure, you will be a special utensil for honorable use. Your life will be clean, and you will be ready for the Master to use you for every good work.
