PERHAPS IT’S BEST to start with the last stanza and meditate on the wonder of it. “Jesus, glorious King of kings, deigns to call me His beloved.” Frequently we recall the names of our Lord. His titles are many and glorious. But it is equally amazing to see what God calls us in Scripture. We are called saints, joint heirs, friends, and coworkers. But what most impressed this hymnwriter was that, over and over in the Bible, we are called God’s beloved.

The New Testament speaks of the mystery of marriage, husband and wife belonging to each other; it’s a picture of Christ and the church. He has given himself to us in remarkable love. Because of His selfless sacrifice, all the privileges of royalty belong to us. And we belong to Him completely.

Do not let sin control the way you live; do not give in to sinful desires. Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God.
