We Can Be Mirrors

All of us have had that veil removed so that we can be mirrors that brightly reflect the glory of the Lord. And as the Spirit of the Lord works within us, we become more and more like him and reflect his glory even more. –2 Corinthians 3:18

Does she or doesn’t she? She does. I’ve started covering up the gray hairs sprouting all over my head by coloring my hair, but there’s no denying I’m getting older. A glance in the mirror reminds me my body is aging. The truth is, while I don’t mind getting older so much, I’m not content for my body to grow older while my spirit stays the same. As I grow older, I want to grow deeper. I want to become more and more like Jesus with every passing day. A year from now, if I am the same as I am today, if there has been no change in my character, no progress toward holiness, if I do not offer a brighter, clearer, more accurate reflection of Jesus in my attitudes and actions, then something has gone desperately wrong. If I’m not changing, reflecting more of his glory, the Spirit is not working on me or in me.

It was different for Moses. After he saw and experienced the glory of God on the mountain, the skin on his face literally glowed with the glory. Then, with each passing day, the glory began to fade away. But it doesn’t have to be this way for us. We have something Moses didn’t have. Moses didn’t have the Holy Spirit living inside him. We do! The Spirit of God is at work within us, seeking to make us into mirrors so we can clearly reflect the radiance and beauty of God’s glory in an ever-increasing way!

What is it going to take for you and me to brightly reflect the glory of the Lord? If we want to shine, we’ve got to let the Spirit get to work on us and in us, transforming us by taking away everything that doesn’t look like Jesus in our lives and by nurturing in us the glorious attributes of Jesus. Can you see that the Spirit’s work in us is our only hope for real and lasting change? Do you accept that until the Spirit of the Lord works within us, we can never break free of the personal habits we hate, the destructive tendencies that tyrannize us, and the worldly patterns that overpower us? The Spirit’s work is what we want. We don’t want to stay the same; we want to change.

Spirit of the Lord, keep working within me and making me more and more like Jesus. I’m not content to keep seeing the same old me in the mirror. I want to reflect the glory of the Lord by becoming more and more like Jesus.
