The Lord Is My Shepherd

The LORD is my shepherd; I have everything I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name. –Psalm 23:1-3

If anyone was an expert on shepherds, it was David, the author of this psalm, the shepherd boy who became king. David knew from experience that a sheep’s quality of life was dependent on the character and commitment of the shepherd. Most likely he had seen neglected, suffering sheep in the care of lazy shepherds. And he had seen flocks flourishing in the care of good shepherds. And because he was confident in the character, commitment, and compassion of God, being under the care of the Good Shepherd was where he wanted to be.

What may be more difficult to understand in this psalm is that David could say, “I have everything I need.” This is the man who had been hunted and attacked not only by King Saul, but also by his own estranged son, Absalom. He had known his share of deprivation and defeat as well as shame and sorrow. And yet he expressed complete contentment. How could he do that?

David recognized that being content in the Good Shepherd’s care is not defined by having our physical, financial, or material needs met at every juncture, but rather by our dependence on his loving care.

Have you ever known people who have experienced hardship and disaster, and yet their lives and their countenances exude deep contentment and quiet joy? Regardless of their circumstances, they entrust their lives to the care of their Shepherd without complaint or consternation. These people radiate humble satisfaction. Their experience has been one of rest and renewal as God leads them every step of the way. Don’t you want to live like that? I do. And yet, so often, we don’t.

The Good Shepherd cares for us lovingly, completely, and purposefully. We can be content with what he provides and where he leads.

My Shepherd, I am so easily discontented with my circumstances and with myself. Help me see that because I am in your loving care, I have everything I need. I trust you to guide me on the right path for your glory.
