Only A Few Ever Find It

You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose the easy way. But the gateway to life is small, and the road is narrow, and only a few ever find it. –Matthew 7:13-14

We live in an age of instant polls. Nearly every day we can look in the newspaper and see what percentage of people engage in a certain activity or have a particular point of view. We read about the latest trend and find ourselves incredibly average or embarrassingly out of step. Being in the majority is often more comfortable than being in the minority, isn’t it? Along with the seeming safety of the majority comes strength in numbers and a sense of “rightness.” It is the difference between being mainstream and fighting your way upstream.

Jesus’ statement that only a few will find their way into the Kingdom of God challenges our assumptions about the soundness of the majority. We wonder how huge numbers of people in our world could be wrong about how to have a life-saving relationship with God and about what makes life worth living. It seems arrogant to believe that a small number of people—people who call themselves by the name of the God of the Bible and Jesus Christ, his Son—have the corner on truth and eternal life. But it is only arrogant if you believe that you are the architect of this plan, that you have done something to make you worthy of being included, or that you have the power to determine who is welcome. The reality is, Kingdom seeking requires that we recognize our complete unworthiness and inability to earn a place in God’s family. It requires that we be willing to humbly admit our inescapable need for a Savior. Following the narrow way to life requires humility, not arrogance.

Have you been accused of being small- or narrow-minded because you have gone against the grain of societal thinking, believing that a relationship with Jesus is the only way to know God eternally? Have you felt as if you’re out of the “in” crowd, going against the grain of your coworkers or neighbors, out of step within your own family? Then take the words of Jesus to heart. He said that few choose to search for life, but those who do, find it. Are you willing to go through the narrow gate to find life?

The Way, the Truth, the Life, I believe and confess that you are the exclusive way to experience eternal life with God. Help me be openhearted in my walk down your road so that others will want to join me on your road to life.
