Turn Off Technology To Turn Off Anxiety
Turn Off Technology To Turn Off Anxiety
The LORD himself will fight for you. Just stay calm. Exodus 14:14
Regina came to me with a series of complaints. “I don’t know what’s going on. My heart is racing, my hands are sweating, and there are times when I can’t get a good breath.”
I asked her some questions and ordered a few tests. Over the next week, we ruled out a range of possible causes, including problems with her heart or lungs, a stroke, and thyroid disease. Yet her symptoms persisted—which is what eventually confirmed my diagnosis.
“Regina, the tests show you’re in great physical shape. All of your results were normal. I’m pretty sure what’s causing your symptoms is generalized anxiety disorder, caused by the stress you’re under.”
Of course, the diagnosis did what I expected it would—it raised her anxiety level.
Anxiety is one of the more common diagnoses in America—some might call it an epidemic. I see it on a daily basis with my patients.
“What do I do about it?” Regina asked. “I’m already stressed enough. I can’t keep feeling this way.”
“The best thing you can do is avoid the things that cause anxiety. For example, if the news upsets you, stop reading the headlines and watching TV. Take a few hours a day to step away from technology. Put your phone in another room, and turn off the TV and the computer. We were created to live in a garden, not in a world overflowing with bits and bytes. No wonder our brains are screaming for peace and tranquility.”
“But am I supposed to just stare at the walls during that time?”
“Use it as a time to reconnect with your friends, family, and God. Go outside and take a walk. Keep a journal about the things you’re thinking and feeling. Use the time to pursue things you enjoy.”
“That does sound more relaxing, but I’m constantly fighting deadlines at work, and I need my computer.”
“Ultimately, if you’re not as anxious, you’ll make better use of technology. Your brain will work better because you’ll be worrying less.”
TODAY’S RX
Sometimes, in order to keep calm, we must unplug and just relax.
Lord, I confess that I’m often so distracted by all the day’s demands that I do not spend regular quiet time with you. Help me to create space in my day to read your Word and pray. Thank you for the renewal I feel when I invest time with you.
