Trusting Through The Storms

Trusting Through The Storms

Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you. 1 Peter 5:7

When our kids were young and I worked a late shift in the ER, Karen always had them tucked into bed before I got home. If the weather was bad, I might come home to find one or more of them curled up in my bed. A storm that had lots of thunder and lightning or a howling wind might mean I would find three or four kids in the bed.

When I would tiptoe in, I’d find them all snuggled up under the covers, looking like puppies, with arms and legs splayed so that they could reach out and touch Karen if they got scared.

Other nights, I would come home and our bed would be empty. I would find Karen cuddling a child in his or her bed. Usually that meant the child was sick or had had a really bad day.

That’s part of what makes mothers so special. They care for their children when they’re sick and worried. In those moments of fear or illness, it’s not enough for a mother to say she’ll be down the hall. The sick or worried child wants to be able to reach out and touch Mama for comfort.

Most nights, the kids slept in their own beds after Karen sang a lullaby to them. If I was home, I would hear her soothing voice filling the house with song. One of my favorites, and one that still lingers in my grown children’s minds, is based on Psalm 56. The lyrics describe putting our trust in God when we’re afraid.

Those simple words gave my children the strength and courage to conquer their fear and sleep in peace. When we’re afraid, Jesus wants us to cast our cares on him—especially in the midst of a storm.
