Trust God For The Trip

Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday. Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evils will not touch you. Psalm 91:6-7

Each week, the news is filled with stories of countless people who are dying from either disaster or disease.

A breathtaking number of people die in earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, tornados, fires, and mudslides every year. The diseases we hear about are equally frightening. As we’re finishing up this devotional, the Zika virus has grabbed worldwide attention. A few years before that, it was the Ebola crisis that seemed as if it would never end—until it suddenly disappeared from the front page. Before Ebola, there was a never-before-seen strain of flu. Ten years before that, we were all afraid of getting SARS. And remember the bird flu?

For those who lost loved ones to those diseases, those tragedies were truly sad days. But millions more people changed their plans because they were worried that one of those dangers might affect them. Fortunately, most of the worries were unfounded.

I was chaperoning a choir trip to Chicago about the time that SARS was affecting China. A friend who was with me on the trip was in the process of adopting a little girl from China. He was making plans to pick her up when the news broke that China was threatening to close its borders to contain the outbreak.

It was a scary time as he tried to figure out the best course of action. We prayed today’s verse, and as we prayed, his resolve to go was strengthened. He and his wife left earlier than they’d planned to pick up their daughter, but God protected their family. The borders were never closed, and the whole family returned home safely and healthily.

TODAY’S RX

Despite all the fearful reports in the media, the Bible tells us to fear not. Trust the Lord to protect you.

Lord, please be with all those who are hurting right now due to a disease or a disaster. Keep them safe and provide for their needs. Thank you for keeping your hand of protection over me.
