Thirsting For More Of Him

LORD, how great is your mercy; let me be revived by following your regulations. Psalm 119:156

“I don’t know what’s happening to me,” Annette said. “I just don’t feel like myself. I’m craving sweets all the time, but I’m losing weight. And I’m so thirsty that I’m always drinking something, which means I constantly have to go to the bathroom—even in the middle of the night!”

“Sounds like it could be your sugar,” I said.

“That doesn’t surprise me one bit. Half of my family is diabetic, and several are on hemodialysis with end-stage renal disease.”

“Let’s do some blood work and see what we can learn.”

When the results came back the next day, Annette’s hemoglobin A1C, which measured the glucose in her blood over the past two to three months was almost twice the normal level. Other tests confirmed that she was a type 2 diabetic. This was actually encouraging, because diet and exercise can positively affect the treatment. Annette’s weight loss needed to continue but in a controlled manner, rather than as a result of hyperglycemia.

“We’ll start you on a strict program to see if we can get things under control quickly. We also need to have some long-term goals in mind. Let’s pray that God will give you the strength and stamina to continue. Remember, this is going to be a marathon rather than a sprint.”

Annette’s faith was bold. “I know that if I work the plan,” she said, “God will have mercy on me. He’ll protect me from having to do dialysis and prevent me from being afraid.”

As Annette got her health under control, her physical thirstiness decreased. But her thirst for God grew stronger.

God can and will protect you, even when you’re facing serious health challenges.

God, give me the stamina to continue this road to recovery. Despite how I feel physically, I know the plans and treatments are for my benefit. Thank you for providing for me during this time and for helping me through.
