The Ultimate Sacrifice

The Ultimate Sacrifice

He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you are healed. 1 Peter 2:24

When I read today’s verse, I think about the fact that Jesus carried our sins in his body. As an emergency room doctor accustomed to seeing trauma, I understand how much Jesus suffered in the twenty-four hours prior to his death. The extent of his injuries would have caused an unbearable amount of pain, yet he bore it. Thinking about it makes me shudder—and also makes me profoundly grateful.

When the weight of all our sins—past, present, and future, for all humanity—is added up, only Jesus could carry that overwhelming burden.

If we trust that our entire debt was paid on the cross that day, then we know that every barrier that would keep us from a full and healthy life has been knocked down. Christ died so we can be dead to sin and alive for all eternity. Every day we have of life and health is because of what Jesus did for us on the cross. He healed us once and for all.

Our freedom from sin was purchased by the ultimate sacrifice on the cross. By his wounds we are healed.
