The Thirst For Knowledge Is Real

I pray for you constantly, asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God. Ephesians 1:16-17

The reason that Eve ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil was that she knew she didn’t know everything that God knew, and she wanted to. One of our basic human needs is to understand things. We have a thirst for knowledge. That’s how we were created.

When I lived as an atheist, I believed that if I learned everything I could about science, literature, math, and the arts, it would eventually fill all of the emptiness inside of me. So I ran toward the false god of knowledge, trying to accumulate as much of it as I could. But knowledge didn’t satisfy. And it didn’t fill the void.

I didn’t know it at the time, but when I was feeding on the tree of knowledge, I was like a stranded sailor who drinks seawater. At first, it appears to quench his thirst, but eventually the salt water will cause his kidneys to fail as the poisonous salt dries up his system. What he thinks will save his life leads instead to total organ failure and death.

Spiritually, it is only by drinking the living water of Christ that our thirst will be satisfied and we will have eternal life. Fortunately, before it was too late, I discovered that knowing and experiencing Christ is the only way to quench our thirst for knowledge and fill our emotional emptiness.

TODAY’S RX

Stop chasing false gods. Though we may hunger and thirst for things that satisfy us temporarily, only faith in Jesus will ensure that we get exactly what we need for fullness of life.

Help me to strive after you, Lord, instead of striving after this world. May I give up my distractions and dedicate time to you today, learning more about you and your ways.
