The Road To Recovery

Letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. Romans 8:6

During my college years, I became an atheist and embraced the prevailing thought of the day—that science alone could explain everything. I didn’t believe there was a God or an afterlife because there was no way to prove it.

I was also very angry. My best friends had died a tragic death in the most unimaginable and cruelest way possible. I didn’t see any point or purpose to life, and I chose to live as if there were no tomorrow. My sinful desires controlled my mind and body. I drank too much and didn’t take care of myself physically.

But one day, I met death eyeball to eyeball as I stared into the face of the cadaver I’d been assigned in my medical school lab. Somehow, seeing my own mortality reflected back to me made my spirit come alive. Weeks later, I repented of my atheistic beliefs and fully accepted Christ as my Savior.

It was only then that I realized how spiritually dead I had been. It was as if my soul had been wandering around in a dry desert, longing for living water. When Jesus rescued me, I hadn’t had any spiritual food or water for many years. I was anemic, anorexic, and bulimic when it came to spiritual sustenance.

Jesus took over my dying case and became my treating Great Physician. Under his care, my spirit began to recover. He gave me new life as well as an understanding of and a longing for eternity with him in heaven.

Though I’m still in spiritual recovery, and will be as long as I am here on earth, my soul has been revived and refreshed and is a thousand times more alive in Jesus than it ever was before.

It is better to be a recovering sinner than afloat on a raft of rebellion and lost in an ocean of sin.

Father, I acknowledge my need for you, day in and day out. Sustain me through tough seasons, keep my fire lit, and increase my desire for you.
