The Road Less Traveled Can Still Get You There

God remembered Rachel’s plight and answered her prayers by enabling her to have children. She became pregnant and gave birth to a son. “God has removed my disgrace,” she said. Genesis 30:22-23

Alexis was afraid that her second marriage would end for the same reason as her first—her husband wanted children, and her body was unable to carry a baby to full term.

Alexis had miscarried three times that she knew about, but she suspected it had been even more. Her second husband understood her plight and stood by her during what they thought would be a surgery to correct the problem.

Unfortunately, soon after the surgery, Alexis started to bleed and went to the ER for a blood transfusion. The hospital admitted her overnight, but by the morning her situation had become life-threatening. The OB/GYN who saw her the next morning gave her the bad news: she needed to undergo an immediate hysterectomy to save her life. She had the surgery that afternoon.

When I saw Alexis the next morning, she was devastated.

“I know in my heart that I’m supposed to be a mom,” she said. “I trusted God, and look what happened.” She began to cry as the questions burst forth from her pain. “How can so many women get pregnant and then have an abortion, when I’ll never be able to conceive again?”

“I’m so sorry, Alexis,” I said, patting her hand. “I know God has a plan for you; I just wish I knew what it was.”

“I know you’re right,” she said.

“Have you considered adoption?” I asked. “I’ve had lots of patients and friends who’ve grown their families that way. I could refer you to an agency if you’re willing to consider it. They could give you more information and answer your questions.”

Alexis said she would talk to her husband, but she was worried because her first husband hadn’t been open to the idea.

A few weeks later, Alexis called and asked me to help her fill out the paperwork they needed to provide to the adoption agency.

Less than a month after they turned in the paperwork, they got a call from the agency, and Alexis left this message on my voicemail: “Thank you! My husband and I are headed to Florida to pick up our new baby daughter!”
