The Lord Heals Your Wounds

“I will give you back your health and heal your wounds,” says the LORD. Jeremiah 30:17

One of my diabetic patients, Jose, was faithful to come to my office every month for a checkup, but he wasn’t consistently taking good care of himself. Diabetes is a disease that requires constant monitoring and vigilance. Otherwise, complications can affect the eyes and kidneys. It can also leave many patients with numbness in their extremities. Though Jose’s vision and renal function had thus far been spared, he was suffering from neuropathy and small vessel disease. He was completely numb to any sensation in his feet.

He came into the office one day after stepping on a nail. The foot wound had started out as a small puncture, but it had gotten so bad that I was afraid we might eventually need to amputate his right leg. Jose and I prayed together, and he agreed to get back on a proper diet. Together we outlined a plan for aggressive wound care.

Weeks rolled into months, and Jose faithfully kept his regular appointments. Even so, it took almost two years before his foot was completely healed. From start to finish, this was a miracle from God because by all accounts, this was a wound that should not have healed. Jose did his part by remaining steadfast and vigilant with his diabetic care. As a result, he was able to continue walking upright on two feet.

Sadly, not every case has such a positive outcome. Over and over I see the same patients with the same problems flaring up, causing them pain and suffering. Even when they’re trying to faithfully follow their treatment plans, the slumbering giant of this disease continues to awaken and raise its ugly head.

If you suffer from a chronic illness, I know that the battle can be wearying. It can take its toll on even the most diligent patient. Often, all it takes is a temporary victory to help heal and reenergize your soul.

God, the journey to healing isn’t easy, and I need you for support and strength. Help me to be patient and persevere as I face setbacks that leave me feeling discouraged. Thank you for knowing my needs and holding me in your arms.
