The Laws I Think About Most

Oh, how I love your instructions! I think about them all day long. Your commands make me wiser than my enemies, for they are my constant guide. Yes, I have more insight than my teachers, for I am always thinking of your laws. I am even wiser than my elders, for I have kept your commandments. Psalm 119:97-100

In college I took a lot of science classes. In chemistry and physics, we learned the laws of nature, such as “a body in motion will remain in motion,” or “order gives way to disorder.” In biology, we learned the theories that seek to explain the origins of humanity.

Whether it was a law or a theory, the science I studied was supposed to answer questions about the world we live in and how we got here. But often, my studies exposed more questions than they answered.

I went on to medical school with the expectation that I would learn the answers to my questions. At the time, I was an atheist who believed that all of life’s mysteries would become known in my study of science and medicine. But the more I studied, the more I realized that no matter how much knowledge I accumulated, there were still questions that the academic disciplines couldn’t answer—or couldn’t answer convincingly.

That’s when my thoughts turned to God.

While sitting in my gross anatomy lab one day, I looked at the human body in front of me, marveling at its beauty and organization. In seeing how the complexity and integration of the various systems were so well conceived and designed, I concluded that an intelligent being must have played a part in our creation.

That’s when I became convinced that there was an artist behind the art. And even though the teaching experts explained a lot of what we saw, there was so much more that couldn’t be explained. Even at the highest levels of science and medicine, there are still mysteries that point to God, and one of those mysteries is the human capacity to feel, think, act selflessly, and love.

When I left my atheistic thinking behind and began to follow God, the laws of science and the theories of medicine still played a role. But I realized, as today’s verses say, that God’s laws have more insight than the wisdom of my earthly teachers.

Lord, I praise you for your artistry and craftsmanship. You’ve made this world so wonderfully complex. Thank you for giving me life.
