The Healer Who Still Draws Crowds

That evening after sunset, many sick and demon-possessed people were brought to Jesus. The whole town gathered at the door to watch. So Jesus healed many people who were sick with various diseases, and he cast out many demons. But because the demons knew who he was, he did not allow them to speak. Mark 1:32-34

Everywhere Jesus walked, he could always draw a crowd. Amid the masses, there were always those who needed healing and those who sought spiritual understanding. Not much has changed in two thousand years.

A missionary friend of mine from Ecuador called after he received a copy of the JESUS movie in Spanish. For some time, he had been praying for an evangelical tool he could use in the villages where his medical caravan went to heal the sick. He was delighted to discover that the movie presented the gospel concisely in a way the villagers could understand. He asked me to come see the impact for myself the next time I could make it to Ecuador.

The weeks leading up to that trip were full of preparations. What I needed to pack depended on where we were going, so I waited for my friend’s call.

“We’ve been invited to go to a remote village at 14,000 feet, so prepare for snow and ice,” he said.

“Really?” I asked, confused. “Snow and ice at the equator?”

A few days later, we set up camp and a makeshift clinic in the main mud hut of a mountain village. At night, the whole town came out to watch the JESUS film. Most had never seen a movie, and they were amazed by the modern technology. They came out of curiosity, but they left with a fuller understanding of who Jesus is.

There was a great outpouring of the Holy Spirit through this film project. Many were spiritually saved, and some were physically healed. I was astonished and amazed to see ancient scenes of the Bible come alive right before my eyes. Crowds still gather to see Jesus, and he still has the power to render us speechless.
