The Giver Of Life Is Also The Great Healer

If you will listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in his sight, obeying his commands and keeping all his decrees, then I will not make you suffer any of the diseases I sent on the Egyptians; for I am the LORD who heals you. Exodus 15:26

At the end of a long day, I entered John’s room and sat down beside his bed. He was asleep as I silently prayed, Please, God, don’t let him die yet.

John’s wife and kids were all Christ followers, but he had never seen a need for God. Now the acute heart attack he’d had earlier that day was likely going to be terminal.

Please, Lord, just a little more time, I prayed.

I thought about all the times when John had visited my office. Though I’d known him for years, I didn’t know if he’d ever listened to my pleas to turn his life around. It wouldn’t have surprised me if he hadn’t. After all, he had never listened when I asked him to quit smoking and drinking. I had also warned him that the stress from his executive position was taking a toll on his health. And now it appeared to have worn out his heart.

As I finished my prayer and left the room, I knew it might be the last time I’d see John. Only the healing hand of God and the care of an excellent cardiac surgeon could save him now.

A few weeks later, I got a call from the cardiac rehab director. “I need to make a follow-up appointment for John.”

Stunned, but elated that he’d made it through the surgery, I set up an appointment for the following week.

When John arrived at my office, I was prepared to have another hard conversation about his lifestyle with him. I also wanted to delve into the spiritual realm with him again. But he surprised me by introducing both topics first.

“The Lord spoke to me last night. And I’m ready to hear whatever wisdom you have for me.”

John accomplished some amazing medical, physical, and lifestyle changes over the next few years. But the most astonishing change was how God had transformed him into a new creation.
