The First Step Is The Most Important One

The First Step Is The Most Important One

Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?” Matthew 14:31

When I ponder Peter’s act of faith in stepping out of the boat to walk on the water toward Jesus, I don’t think about his walk or his fall. I think about that first step. What kind of courage did it take for him to hoist himself over the side of the boat and onto the water? I’ve often tried to imagine what he was thinking as his foot touched the waves. Frankly, I’m impressed that he did it; I would have been cowering in the back of the boat!

Sometimes, the first step is the hardest. Many of my patients come to me with an addiction to alcohol, tobacco, or even food. They want to quit the behaviors that are killing them, but they feel powerless. To overcome any kind of addiction, you can’t keep doing what you’ve always done. You have to take a first step toward the life you want. That first step is often to admit that you have a problem and you’re powerless over it. You need to ask for someone’s help—maybe a friend, a pastor, or a doctor. God can work through many people to show his love for you.

Do you feel paralyzed by inaction? Are there places you want to go in your life, but you’re not sure how to get started in that direction?

The first step is to take that first step.

Whether you sink or swim, you have to get out of the boat and begin moving toward your destination. Fortunately, we know that Jesus is with us every step of the way. If you look, you will see him coming toward you. If you fall, it is his arms that will reach out to catch you. The faith to take the first step is all you need to propel you in the right direction.

Take that first step toward healthy living, and have the confidence that even if you get a little wet, Jesus will be your life jacket.
