The Enemy Is Cancer

The eternal God is your refuge, and his everlasting arms are under you. He drives out the enemy before you; he cries out, “Destroy them!” Deuteronomy 33:27

When we read today’s verse, we know from its context that the armies fighting against the Israelites are the enemies that God drives out. Though this was written in Old Testament times, this verse is still applicable today. In my medical practice I hear God cry out, “Destroy them!” in a very different way.

Here’s one example:

Bryant came in to get the results of a bone marrow test.

“The report confirmed our worst fear,” I said. “I’m sorry to say . . . it’s leukemia.”

“But I was in six months ago, and all my blood work was normal.”

“You’re right. There was no hint of it at that time.”

“So, how long have I had it?”

“It’s hard to say. This is a fairly aggressive form of leukemia, but the good news is that we’ve caught it early on. I’ll get an appointment for you to see the oncologist in the morning, and we will do what we can to defeat this enemy.” Before he left, I promised to pray for him.

A week later, a letter from the oncologist confirmed what I had told Bryant. It was definitely leukemia, but being in an early phase made it treatable. The day after the oncologist examined him, Bryant started his treatment, and we all prayed for the best.

Six months later, Bryant stopped by my office.

“Great news, Dr. Anderson! The leukemia is in remission. And the oncologist is very hopeful.”

We chatted about the good news, and before Bryant left, he said, “The Lord has given me new strength and new hope. Thank you for praying for me.”

God hears our prayers, and he desires to drive out our enemies, even if they are unseen rogue cancer cells.

TODAY’S RX

Prayer can be the weapon that fights even the worst diagnosis. Remember, with God all things are possible—even driving out cancer.

Lord, you are the ultimate source of power and strength. Thank you for giving me courage to battle my illness. I look forward to when I stand victorious in your sight.
