Strength In The Spirit
Strength In The Spirit
Dear friend, I hope all is well with you and that you are as healthy in body as you are strong in spirit. 3 John 1:2
When I look into the eyes of my patients, feel the firmness of their handshakes, and listen to them talk, it’s obvious which ones are strong in spirit. And they are the ones who give me great hope. From experience, I know that patients who are strong in spirit will face with resilience and resolve anything that comes their way.
When the apostle John wrote his third recorded letter, he recognized the connection between body and spirit. In his greeting, he mentions his hope that his friend’s body will reflect the strength and health that John already knows is in his spirit.
There’s a lesson here for all of us. Just as we should not neglect our physical health, neither should we neglect our spirits. We exercise and eat right to take care of our bodies. And to have healthy spirits, we need spiritual exercises and nutrition such as prayer, reading Scripture, and fellowshiping with other believers.
Despite the many adversities my patients face, those who are strong in spirit often overcome their health problems and go on to live into their nineties or even longer. Is it because they are healthier in body or spirit? No one knows for sure, but my guess is that the answer is both.
