Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal comfort and a wonderful hope, comfort you and strengthen you in every good thing you do and say. 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17

Trey’s journey had been most unusual. As I sat down next to him, he began to tell me about it.

“When I was fifteen,” he said, “I got drunk and high one night. I was supposed to meet a girl at the crossroads of the main highway and the railroad tracks that ran through town. But she wasn’t there, so I just sat down to wait for her. I didn’t realize I was sitting in the middle of the train tracks. That’s obviously not a smart thing to do, but at the time, I was drunk and high and not thinking clearly.”

Trey paused and looked off into the distance, as if remembering something.

“The next thing I remember is a train screeching to a stop. It was as if time stood still in that moment. A light that was so bright surrounded me, and I couldn’t see anything else. Then this lone figure approached. It was a man, and he reached out for me. It was my grandfather, and he was asking me if I was ready to go with him.”

But Trey’s grandfather had died ten years earlier.

“I didn’t feel anything when the train hit me. It wasn’t until six months later, when I woke up in the ICU with the right side of my skull crushed, that I felt anything at all. I almost died twice.”

“What do you mean you almost died twice?” I asked.

The day I woke up was the same day my parents had agreed to remove me from life support. But somehow, Jesus protected me and helped me.”

“Wow, that’s quite a journey, Trey. How did it change your life?”

“Without a doubt, I knew that it was Jesus who gave me the strength to overcome my injuries. He’s been my comfort every day for thirty-five years since it happened. Each day, I wake up looking for him, and he’s always right there by me—just like he was when I spent those six months in a coma.”
